Carter Jensen

Carter Jensen

22-Year-Old CatcherC
Kansas City Royals
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Jensen flirted with a 20-20 season while splitting 2024 between High-A and Double-A, and he also impressed in a 12-game run in the Arizona Fall League. A lefty-hitting catcher who turned 21 in July -- two weeks before his promotion to Double-A -- Jensen slashed .259/.359/.450 with 18 home runs, 17 steals on 20 attempts, a 13.2 percent walk rate and a 23.4 percent strikeout rate in 125 games. He then hit .425 with a .582 OBP and four home runs and one steal in 55 AFL plate appearances. Jensen's 31.8 percent hard-hit rate was a very strong mark for a catcher his age, especially one who also commands the strike zone as well as he does. Jensen doesn't grade out as even an average runner, but he's proven to be a savvy base stealer, at least against minor-league batteries. Jensen is a better prospect in OBP leagues than batting average leagues, but he has a pretty high ceiling in both formats due to his ability to hit for power and steal bases at the catcher position. His catcher defense still needs improvement, and it's possible he'll end up seeing time in left field in the coming years. Read Past Outlooks

Rest of Season From Preseason
Signed a one-year contract with the Royals in August of 2025.
Added to big-league roster
CKansas City Royals
September 1, 2025
The Royals selected Jensen's contract from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.
Analysis
One of the top catching prospects in all of baseball, Jensen will join the Royals for September after he delivered a .290/.377/.501 slash line with 20 home runs and 10 stolen bases in 111 games between Omaha and Double-A Northwest Arkansas this season. The Royals' immediate plans for Jensen aren't clear, but the team's willingness to frequently use top backstop Salvador Perez at designated hitter or first base could pave the way for Jensen to see semi-regular playing time at catcher or DH. Jensen bats from the left side, so the Royals may look to limit his exposure to southpaws over the final month of the season.

Major-league action late in 2025?
CKansas City Royals
August 23, 2025
Sam Dykstra and Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com list Jensen as a candidate to be called up by the Royals before the end of the 2025 regular season.
Analysis
Luke Maile has been operating as the Royals' backup catcher since the July 31 trade deadline, when Freddy Fermin was traded to the Padres. Jensen shook off a rough start with Double-A Northwest Arkansas to be promoted to Triple-A Omaha, where he has a .976 OPS with three steals, 11 homers and 30 RBI across 157 plate appearances. It could make sense for Kansas City to call up the 22-year-old Jensen before year's end to get major-league experience behind the dish while working and learning from veteran Salvador Perez.
