Alcantara, who had core-muscle surgery after the season, has spent most of the last two seasons either in the majors (13 games) or at Triple-A (137 games), but he doesn't appear any closer to a prominent role with the big club. The 6-foot-6 center fielder has several plus tools, but his plus speed and plus raw power don't show up that frequently in the box score, and his hit tool is a couple grades below plus. He slashed .266/.349/.470 with 17 home runs, 10 steals and 29.8 percent strikeout rate in 102 games at Triple-A last year, which was just 10 percent better than league average. Alcantara would likely get a pretty long look if he were traded to a second-division team, but he would need an injury or two to get steady run with the Cubs in 2026. Read Past Outlooks

Alcantara got a cup of coffee with the Cubs in 2024 to make his MLB debut. The 22-year-old saw action in three games and recorded one hit across 10 at-bats. He was much more productive in the minors, where he sported a .781 OPS while posting 14 home runs and 61 RBI across 111 games between Double-A and Triple-A. Alcantara also chipped in 14 stolen bases, showing off a good combination of power and speed at a young age. He's a good athlete with some definite upside, though he finds himself in sort of a crowded outfield situation. The Cubs have Ian Happ, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki seemingly locked into starting spots. Cody Bellinger is also on hand to play some outfield and DH, while veterans Mike Tauchman and Patrick Wisdom also provide depth. Alcantara could potentially supplant the latter two if Chicago wants to go younger, but the other players should all have sizeable roles. That could push Alcantara down to Triple-A again to begin the season. Still, he's a player worth keeping an eye on down the road.
