2026 Fantasy Outlook
Ohtani is quite simply one of the greatest baseball players to ever walk the planet. If a shred of doubt remained, he did away with it with two all-time postseason performances: a three-homer game against the Brewers to clinch the NLCS that included six scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts on the mound, likely the greatest single-game performance of all time, before he reached base a major-league postseason record nine times in Game 3 of the World Series. His 2025 regular season was a slight step backward from 2024, as he didn't go 50-50, managing 55 homers and a mere 20 stolen bases in 158 games. Still, he posted an OPS over 1.000 for the third consecutive season and cruised to his third straight MVP award (second straight in the National League). By the end of the campaign, he looked fully back in form on the pitching mound, though those that draft Ohtani in weekly leagues will still want to plan to use him in the UT spot most of the time. After being limited as a pitcher last year in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, Ohtani is poised to work as a two-way player from the outset in 2026. Read Past Outlooks
Prepping for full season in two-way role
Ohtani indicated Saturday that he'll be ready to take on a full two-way role at the outset of the 2026 regular season, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Ohtani began last year continuing to rehab from September 2023 Tommy John surgery and didn't pitch in a major-league game until mid-June. He was managed carefully upon his return to the mound, as he finished the regular season with a modest 47 innings over 14 starts. The superstar was very effective as a hurler, though, posting a 2.87 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 62:9 K:BB during those appearances. The leash was loosened in the postseason, as Ohtani completed six frames in each of his first three playoff outings and then started Game 7 of the World Series on three days of rest. After getting through the summer and fall with no arm issues, Ohtani is now set to slot into the Dodgers' rotation from the outset of the 2026 campaign. There will likely still be some careful management of Ohtani as a pitcher -- manager Dave Roberts stated Saturday that the two-way star won't pitch for Japan in the World Baseball Classic, and he's expected to continue to be part of a six-man rotation with Los Angeles -- but Roberts also said that Ohtani will be treated as a normal pitcher on days when he takes the mound.

Stat Review
How does Shohei Ohtani compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.
* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

After Ronald Acuna established the 40-50, 40-60 and 40-70 clubs in 2023, Ohtani created a new exclusive club of his own in 2024, becoming the first player in major-league history to reach 50 homers and 50 steals in a season. It will go down as one of the greatest fantasy campaigns of all time, and the fact that he was coming off September 2023 Tommy John surgery makes it all the more impressive. His play was not affected by a gambling scandal involving his former interpreter, as Ohtani led the league or was in the 99th percentile in xwOBA, xBA, xSLG, average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard-hit rate, per Statcast. There is usually only one way for a player to go after a career year, and his return to pitching complicates things somewhat, but Ohtani is a once-in-a-lifetime talent and the unprecedented can be expected at this point. Even as a UT-only player coming off a torn labrum in his left shoulder suffered during the World Series that will delay his return to the mound a bit, Ohtani will likely be the first player off the board in many leagues in 2025.

Joining Team Japan for WBC
Ohtani announced Monday that he'll play for Japan during the 2026 World Baseball Classic, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Analysis
Ohtani, who is fresh off a unanimous MVP Award and a World Series victory against the Blue Jays, will begin the World Baseball Classic with Japan on March 6 in Pool C. The two-way star played a big role in Japan's World Baseball Classic victory in 2023 and was later named the World Baseball Classic MVP. It remains to be seen whether Ohtani will pitch for Team Japan after tossing only 47.0 inning during the regular season for LA following a recovery from Tommy John surgery.
