Joins Buffalo on one-year deal
Georgiev signed a one-year, $825,000 contract with the Sabres on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Georgiev's contract is cheap enough to make it possible to bury his cap hit in the minors if he doesn't perform well enough to make the NHL roster. He'll compete with Alex Lyon and Devon Levi for the backup role during training camp, though this signing seems to indicate the Sabres don't expect Levi to begin in the NHL this year. Georgiev had terrible numbers between Colorado and San Jose last year, with a 15-26-4 record with a 3.71 GAA and an .875 save percentage over 49 regular-season appearances.

Despite playing in one more game than last season, Georgiev failed to reach the 40-win threshold in 2023-24, coming up just two victories shy. By some metrics, it was a down campaign for the Bulgarian backstop, as he posted a career-worst .897 save percentage and had a GAA above 3.00 for just the third time in his NHL career. Still, the 28-year-old netminder enters the 2024-25 campaign as the No. 1 option for Colorado - though both Ivan Prosvetov and Justus Annunen could be in line for some extra starts in the backup role. Even if he can't get his save percentage up next season, Georgiev figures to be among the top netminders taken in most drafts thanks to his heavy workload and ability to rack up wins behind a strong team.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Likely headed for San Jose
Georgiev is expected to be traded to the Sharks from the Avalanche on Monday as part of a deal that includes Mackenzie Blackwood going the other way, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports.
ANALYSIS
Georgiev has underwhelmed this season with an 8-7-0 record and a career-worst 3.38 GAA in 18 appearances for Colorado. With the Avs exporting to compete for the Stanley Cup, they have completely overhauled their goalie room in less than two weeks with the addition of Scott Wedgewood and then this move to ship out Georgiev in favor of Blackwood.
