2025 Fantasy Outlook
Chychrun’s first year as a Capital was a career-best season across the board. He scored a career-high 20 goals -- the third-highest mark among NHL defensemen -- and matched a career high with 27 assists. For an offensive defenseman, the assist numbers feel low, but he’s never had more than 30 in a season. Part of that is because his role on the power play isn’t typical of a defenseman. His ability as a gifted scorer allows the Capitals to be one of the only teams in the NHL with two defensemen on the top power-play unit. John Carlson is the distributor, allowing Chychrun to focus on scoring goals. However, the even-strength play, where he recorded 15 goals, is where he really discovered something this season. Anticipating another 20-goal season might be too much, but the unique role Chychrun plays should make him good for another double-digit goal, 40-point season. Read Past Outlooks
One of each in comeback win
Chychrun scored a goal, supplied an assist, fired six shots on net and served two PIM in Saturday's 4-3 overtime win over Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Chychrun chipped in a secondary helper on Dylan Strome's goal in the second period before later finding twine himself for the game-tying goal late in the third period. Following Saturday's pair of points, Chychrun is up to 19 goals, 24 assists, 173 shots on net, 45 hits and 74 blocked shots across 54 games this season. With 43 points, he is tied for eighth in the NHL among defensemen. The 27-year-old blueliner is not only firing the puck at an elite rate for a defenseman, but he also ranks 13th among all NHL skaters in shots on net. Chychrun is entering elite territory for defensemen in fantasy and is well on the way to posting his first campaign with 50-plus points across his 10-year career.

Chychrun was traded to the Capitals in exchange for fellow defenseman Nick Jensen and a 2026 third-round pick during the summer. The 26-year-old Chychrun compiled 16 goals and 46 points in 94 appearances over parts of two seasons with the Senators after being acquired from Arizona. He has endured more than his fair share of injury concerns throughout his career but remained healthy in 2023-24 and showcased his capabilities. In 82 games, he earned 14 goals, 41 points, 204 shots on net, 154 blocked shots and 72 hits. Chychrun could skate on the top pairing and see time on the second power-play unit during the upcoming campaign. If he can avoid injuries again, he could have a career year offensively with the Capitals.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Caps interested in extension
The Capitals are interested in signing Chychrun to a contract extension, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports Friday.
ANALYSIS
The Capitals were concerned with how much the salary cap was going to go up in the future. The NHL released information Friday stating that the cap would rise to $95.5 million next season from $88 million, rise in 2026-27 to $104 million and finally to $113.5 million in the 2027-28 campaign. The jump in salary will easily make Chychrun -- who can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the current campaign -- fit under the cap over the next few seasons. Chychrun has 13 goals and 33 points over 46 games this year and is on pace to smash his career-high mark of 41 points, a mark he's reached twice in his career.
