2025 Fantasy Outlook
Akers signed with the Saints in June, but with two Achilles' tendon tears in his injury history he likely faces an uphill struggle to get playing time. Akers is only 26 and when healthy he still flashes standout athleticism, particularly as a power runner. He got his foot into the door in Minnesota last year -- his second stint with the team, and acquired by trade from Houston -- and as the year went on Akers continued to establish himself as Minnesota's power-rushing specialist behind Aaron Jones. In New Orleans, Alvin Kamara is the three-down back, but after him it gets murky. The oft-injured Kendre Miller, 2025 sixth-round pick Devin Neal and Clyde Edwards-Helaire will compete with Akers in training camp to back up Kamara. Read Past Outlooks

Can't stick with Saints
New Orleans released Akers on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Akers was a solid contributor in 2024, rushing 104 times for 444 yards (4.3 YPC) and two scores across 17 regular-season games split between the Vikings and Texans. He also demonstrated impressive red-zone versatility, securing 14 of 18 targets for 68 yards and three additional touchdowns. The veteran running back couldn't carve out a spot on the Saints' 53-man roster behind Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller and Devin Neal, but Akers figures to draw interest around the league from teams in need of reliable backfield depth.

Akers' ill-fated career hit another setback in 2024. After finally wearing out his welcome for good with the Rams, he got traded to the Vikings after just one game and seems set up for success in a backfield that was looking to replace Dalvin Cook. Akers never really got on track for Minnesota though, averaging 3.6 yards per carry before tearing his left Achilles tendon in Week 9. He previously tore his right Achilles tendon in 2021. Now a free agent, he'll have to prove he's healthy before he gets a look from another team.

Minicamp tryout nets deal
Akers agreed to a one-year deal with the Saints on Friday after a successful minicamp tryout, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran back found a tepid market for his services over the first several months of free agency, but he made enough of an impression on the Saints' coaching staff during two minicamp practices this week. Despite the fact he's already put in five seasons at the NFL level, Akers won't turn 26 until later in June, although he's already torn both Achilles tendons since entering the league in 2020.
