ANALYSIS
Gonzalez has not participated in practice since suffering a hamstring injury in late July. A return to practice next week would be a step in the right direction for the 2023 first-rounder, but he would likely need to log multiple practices to have a shot at being ready for Week 1 against the Raiders on Sunday, Sept. 7. Charles Woods, Alex Austin and Marcus Jones would be the top candidates to start at outside corner opposite Carlton Davis if Gonzalez is not available for the Patriots' regular-season opener.

A torn labrum in his shoulder limited Gonzalez to four regular-season games as a rookie, but now that the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft is back in action, he's slated to claim a key role in New England's secondary this coming season. Along with Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones, Gonzalez forms the nucleus of the team's cornerback group, and provided he can stay healthy, the Oregon product will have an opportunity to achieve IDP relevance in his second campaign as a pro.

Gonzalez, who surprisingly fell to the Patriots in the No. 17 slot of the 2023 NFL Draft, profiles as the "toolsiest" corner in his class at 6-2, 201 pounds with 4.38 speed and the length to stick on the outside. Not only was the Oregon product a great value, he also fills what was considered one of the team's top pre-draft needs. As a result, Gonzalez should challenge for reps immediately opposite Jonathan Jones.
