Kansas City Chiefs
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Tonyan is now far removed from his 11-touchdown 2020 breakout, when he displayed rare chemistry with Aaron Rodgers and used that mind meld to become one of the league's most dangerous red-zone threats. More recently, Tonyan finished 2023 with an 11-112-0 receiving line across 17 regular-season games with Chicago, then failed to draw a target across five appearances with Minnesota in 2024. He's merely competing for reserve reps behind Travis Kelce and Noah Gray with the Chiefs. Read Past Outlooks

TEKansas City Chiefs
August 28, 2025
The Chiefs signed Tonyan from their practice squad to their active roster Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Tonyan first signed with KC in mid-March, and he was released on cutdown day Tuesday before joining the team's practice squad one day later. The veteran tight end has now been made a part of the active roster, where he's set to serve as depth behind Travis Kelce, Noah Gray and Jared Wiley. Tonyan has plenty of experience to bring to the table, having seven seasons of NFL action on his resume.

How often does Robert Tonyan run a route when on the field for a pass play?
This data will let you see how Robert Tonyan and the other tight ends for the Chiefs are being used. Some tight ends may have a lot of snaps, but they're not that useful for fantasy purposes because they're not actually running routes. This data will help you see when this is the case.

Tonyan burst onto the scene in 2020, developing excellent chemistry with Aaron Rodgers en route to 586 yards and a whopping 11 touchdowns. The tight end regressed with just two touchdowns through eight games in 2021, then missed the second half of that season due to a torn ACL. He bounced back a bit in his final season with the Packers, posting 470 yards (the second-highest total of Tonyan's career) and two TDs. Tonyan's production then cratered on the Bears in 2023, as he finished with just 112 yards and no touchdowns as Cole Kmet's backup. Tonyan signed with the Vikings in May, completing his tour of the NFC North. He could play a prominent role out of the gate as T.J. Hockenson probably won't be available to begin the season while recovering from January surgery on a torn ACL.
During the first five years of his career in Green Bay, Tonyan was at his best in 2020, when he caught 52 of 59 targets for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns. That was one of the most efficient seasons we've seen from a tight end not named Travis Kelce or George Kittle. Last year, Tonyan's 67 targets were the most he's had in a campaign, which he turned into his second-most productive season (470 yards and two TDs). Now in Chicago, he'll go from being the clear No. 1 option to a backup role behind Cole Kmet. Based on Tonyan's past success, if Kmet misses time, the former could become a fantasy factor.
It wasn't unexpected that Tonyan found it difficult last year to duplicate the tremendous red-zone success he had with Aaron Rodgers in 2020, but it was a knee injury that ruined his season. After 11 TD catches the previous season, seven of which came on 11 red-zone targets, Tonyan naturally regressed to one red-zone TD on six targets last season, with two total in eight games. Unfortunately, a torn ACL in Week 8 robbed him of the chance to turn things around in the second half of the season. Tonyan was on the PUP list until Aug. 15 and thus appears uncertain for Week 1. When he does suit up, he could play a larger role, as the Packers traded top WR Davante Adams and did not re-sign Marquez Valdes- Scantling, and Tonyan has little competition for snaps and targets at tight end with only Josiah Deguara perhaps in the mix.
Despite playing more snaps on special teams than offense through his first two NFL seasons, Tonyan was quick to pounce after Jimmy Graham's departure last spring created an opening in Green Bay. The young tight end scored his first touchdown of 2020 in Week 2, adding another Week 3 and three more Week 4. Tonyan then had a five-game TD drought ... before scoring exactly one in five consecutive games Weeks 11-15. He saw more than five targets in a game only twice all year, making up for it with an 88.1 percent catch rate (first among TEs), 9.9 YPT (third) and 11 TDs (T-1st). Some of the efficiency stats are small-sample outliers - including seven TDs on 11 red-zone targets - but it's also true that Tonyan and QB Aaron Rodgers both played well last year, and the Packers still don't have much else at tight end.
Tonyan caught six more passes last year than he did in 2018 despite playing in five fewer games, but he still never found himself playing more than a complementary role in the Packers offense. He's a good bet to hold onto a roster spot on a team that values tight ends, but if all players at his position are healthy it's tough to see him any higher than fourth on the depth chart.
Tonyan joined the Packers late in the 2017 season, and he showed enough after that to secure a spot on last year's roster coming out of training camp. Other than a 54-yard touchdown in Week 11, Tonyan did not do much, catching just three other passes. He remains in the conversation for 2019, but will be behind veterans Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis and will draw competition from rookie Jace Sternberger. The Packers kept four tight ends on the roster last season, though, and did not add any other veterans, which gives Tonyan a good chance to remain on the roster if four players at his position again make the cut for Week 1.

Stock rising after Friday's game
TEKansas City Chiefs
August 16, 2025
Tonyan made a strong case to make the Chiefs' 53-man roster after catching five passes on as many targets for 41 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason game against the Seahawks, Christian Gonzales of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tonyan is in a battle with Jared Wiley for the No. 3 tight end job behind Travis Kelce and Noah Gray. Tonyan made his case during Friday's preseason loss, leading the Chiefs in both catches and yards while connecting with Gardner Minshew on a one-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Tonyan has played on three different teams over the last three years, but entering his eighth NFL season, he has the means to step into a prominent role in the Chiefs' offense should Kelce or Gray be sidelined due to injury.
