Honing in on roster spot
Thornton is likely to make the Chiefs' 53-man roster, Jesse Newell of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornton isn't exactly a roster lock in the way that Rashee Rice (groin), Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown (ankle), JuJu Smith-Schuster and rookie fourth-rounder Jalen Royals are, but Newell reports that training camp has clearly demonstrated that Andy Reid envisions a role for Thornton's 4.28 speed. Newell notes that Thornton would be an ideal fit to take over the field-stretching role Kansas City had relied on Justin Watson, now with the Texans, to handle the last three seasons. Thornton will also be a candidate to contribute in the return game, which would boost his odds of securing a depth WR spot on the regular-season roster.

Over the first two years of his pro career, Thornton, a 2022 second-rounder, has had trouble staying on the field and been limited to 35 catches in 22 contests. With an eye toward holding up better, the 6-2, 185-pounder sought to bulk up ahead of this season. Thornton's speed remains his calling card, and that's what could help him stick around if he has a strong summer under the tutelage of new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. On the plus side, Thornton, 24, figures to have a clean slate with the team's new coaching staff, but the Baylor product has plenty of competition for targets in a crowded wideout corps that lacks a clear pecking order ahead of training camp.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Expanded role Week 1?
Thornton would be in line for more snaps on offense in the Chiefs' Week 1 matchup against the Chargers on Friday, Sept. 5 if rookie fourth-rounder Jalen Royals is unable to play due to a knee injury.
ANALYSIS
Per Jesse Newell of The Athletic, Royals is not expected to play in the Chiefs' regular-season opener while working through knee tendinitis. That would put Thornton -- who signed a futures deal with the Chiefs in February after being waived by the Patriots in November -- in line to see a more prominent role in the offense, and that role could expand further if Hollywood Brown is ruled out due to foot and ankle injuries. Thornton has logged 39 catches on 76 catches for 385 yards and two touchdowns across 28 regular-season games since entering the league as the Patriots' second-round pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.
